lahznimmo architects were engaged by Hawkesbury City Council to design a new community centre for Pitt Town, New South Wales. Part of the Fernadell Park redevelopment, the project provides a building that supports a variety of activities whilst fostering a strong sense of community. This is achieved through a design that is robust, flexible, adaptable and efficiently zoned to meet current and future needs.
The building is divided into two distinct volumes; a double-height community hall to the North and a single-storey support wing to the South. The taller, northern volume contains the more active and social spaces, engaging with the children’s play area and recreation fields to the North.
A lower height volume to the south contains an entry foyer, community meeting rooms, amenities and building services. The scale of this wing relates to the surrounding streetscape, providing a transition between the more active hall activities and quieter residential properties to the West and South.
Clad in brickwork of earthy and sandy tones, its materiality relates to the sandstone public buildings of the area, including Scots Uniting Church and St James Anglican Church. The building is wrapped by a generous covered veranda, allowing for hall overflow and spaces for community activities. Referencing the orchards and market farms of Pitt Town’s past, it is draped with a white veil, lifting up to announce points of entry and falling to provide sun shading and weather protection.
