lahznimmo architects have been engaged by Canterbury Bankstown City Council to complete a new multipurpose community facility and library on the existing Greenacre Community Centre site. The scope of the works retain the Early Learning Centre while demolishing the old community centre, playground, skate ramps and carpark to enable the new development.
These proposed works include the construction of:
Multipurpose community centre hall and meeting rooms
Children-focused library
External landscape works
Commissioned Artwork
The building is positioned closer to Waterloo Rd, with Community Centre spaces addressing the street and the Children’s Library oriented toward the Early Learning Centre, separated by a large shared lawn. The slope across the site is mitigated by positioning the building at a vantage point that allows for on grade car parking while also providing views out over the external landscape works and to Roberts Park Oval. Outdoor areas of the building connect into new pedestrian pathways that stitch the building into the existing site wide pedestrian network and into the significant landscape works which include the new Half Court, Children’s Playground and Nature Play spaces.
The building form has been developed to express the two main functions of the building giving hierarchy to the library and hall as the primary elements. Raised, articulated roof forms are introduced to these primary elements with “pop-ups” over each space capturing sunlight and providing natural ventilation into the public spaces within. This language of “pop-ups” provides a recognisable profile for the new facility giving the building a distinct character. This profile is carried around as a motif elsewhere, used at the entry awning with the lower roof given its own moment to announce the building’s main entryway. The entry awning is designed with the commissioned Belinda Smith artwork integrated into the soffit, with ceramic tiled panels overhead providing a welcoming entry experience for visitors.
