Following an open two-staged competition for the German Embassy in Canberra conducted by BBR, our team with Richter Musikowski Architekten and Spackman Mossop Michaels Landscape Architects were awarded the First Prize.

Our design response was informed by the landscape and topography of the site, with the oval of the lawn and the surrounding treetops to the west and south naturally describing a gentle slope, and space-forming arc. The new pergola roof reinforces and captures this emerging oval as well as connecting the two buildings to form an intimate, poetic garden. The inhabited spaces under the curved canopy, as well as the grassland and the landscaped path that surround it, will encourage the sharing of experiences, the exchange of ideas and the strengthening of existing relationships between Germany and Australia.
