The Panania Library and Community Facility is a new multipurpose building that will provide library services, flexible community spaces, and upgraded public amenities for the Panania village centre. The project is located on the land of the Dharug People, at the corner of Anderson Avenue and Tower Street. The site currently accommodates the existing Panania Library + Knowledge Centre and Panania Senior Citizens’ Centre.
The project scope involves the demolition of the existing Panania Library + Knowledge Centre and Panania Senior Citizens’ Centre, and the construction of a new library and community building to the south of the site, with open park space and a new amenities block to the north.
The new community facility will be approximately 1000 square metres in size and will include:
600 m² library space
150 m² shared space, including services and amenities
130 m² community hireable space
Active, primary spaces of the building address the street frontages and park, creating a ‘ribbon of activity’ within the village centre. Expressed as a taller, more civic-scale volume, internally the ribbon wraps to form a west- and north-facing ‘public room’, with views to the activity of the town centre and park. This civic volume then extends externally to form a generous, shaded external covered way, which connects the building to the primary street addresses and the north-facing public plaza and park. The new park and plaza include open lawn areas, seating, and provision for community activities such as markets, while protecting existing significant trees.
